Cartoon-A-Thon by: Chato B. Stewart For Mental Health Month

Schizophrenia

I feel it is one of the most widely misunderstood mental illnesses. The media is no help either. I take fault with many CSI and Law & Order type shows that use the illness to provoke fear. By making the killer a person suffering from schizophrenia to add drama and unpredictability, of course, stigmatizes the illness and its survivors.

Yet, there have been some very insightful movies highlighting the disorder. One new movie was Canvas ( http://www.canvasthefilm.com )

“every scene is completely believable, no over the top nuttiness, no artificial tear jerking. This is a low budget, independent film but Maricia Gay_Harden may get another oscar nomination out of it. Joe Pantoliano is more engaging and more disciplined than ever before. Devon Gearhart, a ten year old playing a ten year old, will draw comparisons to Jodie Foster”

Who could forget John Nash’s life story in the movie A Beautiful Mind. I had the privilege to meet Mr. Nash. He was the key-note speaker for the Sarasota NARSAD Florida Research Symposium.
