Mental Health Humor, Ask Dr. Bob Bob: Bipolar Disorder

Jamie Fellner, the Director of the U.S. Program of Human Rights Watch, said in a report that “Prisons have become the nation’s primary mental health facilities. But for those with serious illnesses, prison can be the worst place to be. ” That was five years ago! Today it is even worse. “One in six U.S. prisoners is mentally ill. Many of them suffer from serious illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. There are three times as many men and women with mental illness in U.S. prisons as in mental health hospitals.”

It’s no surprise that mental illness in the prison population is three times higher than in the general population. Yet, my question is not the - what do we do with people dealing with mental disorders when they are in prison?… No because I don’t believe mental illness is a get out of jail free pass for anyone… You do the crime you do the time! Although, the mental facilities need to be addressed and help must be offered. In the end, if your a violent offender due to a disorder you need help… Yet, a lot of times it’s not till prison that the disorders are even addressed. Although addressed, they still lack the needed services to handle the volume of cases.

My Question is why wait till prison to get help? With economy heading down hill, depression and other disorders will rise. NO questions about that. Now is time to establish ways to offer more help… It’s estimated that it costs up to $75.00 a day to keep a person in prison - that is $27,367 a year! Many hard working families don’t even make that working 40 hours a week! If we can develop more types of help, for the over load, maybe we can reduce the need for jail time for people with mental disorders.

Well, you may ask, HOW? Well, it can be as simple as getting someone in distress help and an evaluation. We who deal with the disorder can help as well. Volunteering at drop-in centers, establishing Peer to Peer support groups, joining online forums, and helping to educate others about mental illness. We don’t have to do much but every little bit we do will help. And let me commend the thousands of people dealing and recovering with mental disorders for doing just that! There is a new movement in mental health call “Peer to Peer”. Where we, those dealing with disorders, can help our peers dealing with the same, find the right help and support needed.

My goal is to change the way people look at mental health one cartoon at a time.
