Mental Health Humor : Rage Against the Gumby
-*-*-*-*-*-*SITE MAP *-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Mental Health Humor : Rage Against the Gumby will look at what some call Acute Anger or just rage. GRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr! Classic signs are “screaming, physical expressions of anger, violence or threats of violence, sulking, manipulation, emotional blackmail, silent smoldering, and anger used to punish”* Yet, those of us that get so mad we “RAGE” have some very useful tools we can use to regain control. Just don’t tell me that when I’m in that type of mood!
I’m dyslexic and reading and writing is a chore for me… Yet, I write and read daily… hmmmm strange, but true. Here is the point, when you have a “disability” that causes you a little more time to grasp a concept, it can be frustrating. Frustration can lead to just getting pissed off, to getting mad, and maybe then you cool off… Rage on the other hand, skips all those steps and just jumps right into battle. We all have the tendency and it is a common factor in many disorders. We can feel lucky because this one is universal and you don’t need a mental Illness to have anger or understand it.
I once heard rage defined as “depression pointed inward”. Now, I’m not sure if that is the true definition but it does make sense. So, what kind of tools can we use? Well, since I’m still learning, I thought I would find the best website that I could to get a simple and helpful list of tools. After looking at a “LOT” that just glosses over the tools or is trying to sell me some book about it. I found what I wanted on American Psychological Association** website. Here are a few tools as defined Dr. Spielberger: Relaxation, Cognitive Restructuring, Problem Solving, Better Communication, Changing Your Environment, and my favorite: USING HUMOR
“Silly humor” can help defuse rage in a number of ways. For one thing, it can help you get a more balanced perspective…. ; and humor can always be relied on to help unknot a tense situation…….There are two cautions in using humor. First, don’t try to just “laugh off” your problems; rather, use humor to help yourself face them more constructively. Second, don’t give in to harsh, sarcastic humor; that’s just another form of unhealthy anger expression……What these techniques have in common is a refusal to take yourself too seriously. Anger is a serious emotion, but it’s often accompanied by ideas that, if examined, can make you laugh.”
“when none of these three techniques work, that’s when someone—or something—is going to get hurt.”
What are your thoughts? What do you do when you get mad? How do you manage your anger?

I actually take St. John’s Wort to control my anger
because I’m depressed but can’t afford a psychiatrist or a therapist, and yoga helps a great deal as well. It’s weird because at times I’ve found myself overreacting, I always wonder what the heck I was that upset about.
P.S. Count me in for your Friday fun!
I’ve actually heard anger defined as displaced anxiety. Isn’t that interesting? I’m not sure I agree, but it is something to think about.
