Mental Health Humor: Sleepless Mind

 -*-*-*-*-*-*SITE MAP *-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Mental Health Humor: Sleepless Mind. Sleeping is one of the key factors in the identification of a disorder. Some of the very first questions a therapist asks is “How are you sleeping?” Identifying your sleep pattern can help identify your mental state or help with a diagnosis. Therefore, help with a treatment plan. If you can’t sleep, you can’t get well. With Bipolar disorder, sleeplessness or insomnia is a key factor in mania. Many dealing with manic episodes can go without sleep for days or weeks. The sleep pattern is way off. Up all night. Going all day and just getting a couple hours of sleep here and there. Sometimes, it seems like it’s the fuel to the fire for mania. Yet, to the other extreme - depression drains you completely and sometimes you sleep all day.

Here are two examples of the lack of sleep or too much sleep being detrimental to our mental state. Dealing with insomnia caused by or linked to a mental disorder, some people have chosen different methods of coping or finding a solution. The obvious is to take a pill. Many medications are on the market today to help with that whether you deal with mental illness or not. Many medications are designed to make you sleep. Some use holistic medicines, vitamins and such. While others use the old fashioned standard of counting sheep. Whatever the case, sleep is important for being healthy and balanced. I’m tired! Are you? Did you sleep well last night? I was up way too late again. It’s no surprise that sleep has an affect on mental health. Are you having trouble getting to sleep? Do you count sheep? What helps you get a good night sleep? Do you notice a difference in your mental well being when you get good sleep vs. not getting any?

Interesting, today’s blog should be about sleep, as this has been a real problem for me this month and I think a big factor in a depressive episode. If I stay up too late for even one night, I sleep too much during the next day; (I don’t work full time) it seems lately I just can’t catch up, and if I don’t sleep at the right times, then I don’t eat enough, which doesn’t help… I feel like my musical activities/work has been going very well but little else. I’m going on a little musical getway this weekend and I hope I will come back in a better state than I left! (A little hypomania would actually be welcome at this point; I’m bipolar II.) I think a big key for me is allowing plenty of time to “wind down” and let the brain slow down from overstimulation before trying to go to sleep. That’s been part of my downfall, I think.

I have a lot of trouble getting to sleep every night. A lot of times my pain will keep me awake and very uncomfortable.

I am the worst insomniac on the planet. Now I find that I possibly have a mental disorder? Thanks Chato. I’ll definitely be restless with my anxiety over this.

If there’s one single thing in life that I hate it’s not being able to get my sleep!! I used to be able to find things to do when I lived in the country (even go out and take the dog for a while, and a flashlight in my hand) Now I’m in a 5th story apartment, and no dog….I have to try to keep things quiet so my hubby can sleep in peace..My psych doesn;t want me to take any sleep meds at all, so I told him to look for me in hospital with my cycles all screwed up…
No sleep meds; there’s a way around that…I take my antianxieties every night and will until my sleep returns to normal.

LOL Thx for every one comments!
@TG - I know what you mean about tossing off your sleep schedule, I’m always fighting to catch up that lost sleep but it never happens for me… lol Also do you have a website for your musice I would love to feature som of it here if you don’t mind.

@Pink - sorry to hear about the pain keeping you up… nothing worst then wanting to sleep but not bening able to.

@Hauteness - This site does not imply you have have a mental disorder I just write from the consumer point of view, meaning a large percent of the readers deal with one type of disorder or another. But, think you are make a joke with your post so just let me take it one step more the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: DSM-IV has anxiety as classified as a mental health disorder already, so the insomnia might just part of that disorder… doh! :) welcome to the club… ;)

@electri - I hope you can work out that med issue or find some way to get some sleep.
