Mental Health Humor: Omega-3 Fish Oil and Depression
Mental Health Humor: Omega-3 Fish Oil and Depression
Omega-3 fish oil has long been touted as the natural antidepressant. Go to any of the thousands of online natural drug sites and you can read all the so-called reports. But is this wonder oil, all it is made out to be?
You can use the fish or flax oil of omega-3 in a gel pill or liquid. With all the studies done on it, you will find that most are flawed or on such a small scale that the results are questioned. Still, there is some hope for the fish oil… The ONE MAJOR problem??? How much to take to be effective??
My wife and I did our own trial a few years back with Omega-3, mainly out of necessity. After reading a Harvard School of Public Health article about the amount that was needed to be taken to have any real affect… it turned out to be 14000 mgs a day! The wife and I started out at 4000 and worked up to 8000 for about 4 weeks… Now my mood was hard to judge. Since I was already on meds, but there was such an after taste following the first week. Then after a month, I started to smell like fish! I had a very odd body odor. So even though, I felt it was helping, I cannot be 100% sure. Plus, my wife wasn’t totally convinced there was much of a noticeable difference (for the better) in my mood. Still, it does show some promise and many people are finding some help with it!
Well, now you know what I think. What do some of the health care professionals think about it? For example:
“Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit medical practice dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of virtually every type of complex illness.”
Regarding:
Omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil, alpha-linolenic acid
“It is unclear if omega-3 fatty acids can help improve symptoms of bipolar disorder. Study results are mixed.”
Have you ever tried Omega-3? What kind of results did you have? Did you have cats following you around, too?

I just found your blog on GLCZone and I love it. Humor mixed with information can’t be beat. Thank you, Brooklyn
I took it and found myself burping up a fishy taste.
I’ve taken it and haven’t found it to be effective. Like you, though, I couldn’t manage to take as much as possible. It was something like 2 capsules three times a day, which just seemed excessive - not to mention expensive! We stick to eating fish twice a week and my doctor-prescribed meds.
