Mental Health Humor: Vacationing on a vacant mind

Summer simmers away and you might find yourself just strumming away. The stress of living in these days, age enough to make the sane mind weak. Every day, we hear how bad things are getting, gas, food, and daily living is now down to just real life survival. For me, I have been out of work for over three months and I work for myself. I’m making ends met by taking on other types of work and just doing what I can. But, it is times like these, we need evaluate not just our wallet and bank accounts but also our minds and coping mechanisms.

Now if people who don’t’ deal with a brain disorder, are now entering the world of depression and anxiety due to situational issues, how much more so do you think we are going to be affected?

So, I thought we could go over some effective things we can do to keep our minds from taking a vacation.

  1. STICK to you wellness program… Take your medications and keep your doctors number on hand.
  2. Start or continue charting your moods and identifying and keeping track of your triggers.
  3. Find a support group or peer group where you can open up and talk out the problems. Here are twin links to search for groups: DBSA and NAMI
  4. Have a well established wellness tool box or coping skills bag… This is the tool you will use to over come the bumps in the road… As you know, drawing and humor is top on my list.
  5. Talk to your loved one. Open communication can help keep the peace… No, I am not talking about telling them.. “LEAVE ME ALONE, I’M HAVING A BAD DAY!” Although, I’m sure I have done that a few times myself, but talk about what is going on. It might help them to understand and give you the needed support to help maintain your balance.
  6. And finally, take some time for your self. Give your mind a chance to recover. Try to remember that what ever we may be dealing with right now, no matter how bad our mind wants us to believe it is, it will pass!

I believe that if we can focus on these things, we might be able to cope better with our daily torments. Notice, I said “might be able to“, sometimes all our efforts can fail. We need to recognize that, and have the strength to be willing to whether by force or our own accord to take a hospital vacation if our mind goes vacant.
