Mental Health Humor: Heart Attack, Lester Light Bulb’s Bright Idea

A new study was published this week that “heart patients should be screened routinely for depression.” Yes, after years of study, they have concluded that people who have a heart attack may be prone to depression… Judith Lichtman of Yale University School of Medicine, co-wrote the new guidelines, published in the Journal Circulation.

“Studies show that depression is about three times more common in patients following a heart attack than in the general community,”

Lichtman said more research is needed to understand why heart patients are more likely to be depressed.

Now, I’m going to out on a limb here and help them understand it…

They are depressed because THEY ALMOST DIED!

You know, I can remember a time when I meet some one who just had an heart attack and was manic… I’m sure that will be the next study.

O.k., with all kidding aside, I think it is a great idea to screen and educate Heart Attack victims about depression. Well, really this should be done with any one who experiences trauma or a long term visit to the hospital. Personally, I would think research money would be better spent on the education then on more studies… This is just my 2cents.

Mental Health Humor: Dr Bob Bob - Jailed in your Mind

From time to time the cartoons I draw can really hit close to home, and we get flooded with great comments for all of you… I want to say thank you for that and to tell you to keep up all the comments… Don’t forget, every one that comments on this week’s post will get a link and commented replied to on the weekly review (of course that is at/within my discretion.)

jail,State Prison Inmates ,State Pen,mental health humor Well, Sunday’s cartoon got a lot of hits and some great comments that I did not want to wait till the week-end to highlight, in particular one of them. You have mostly seen his comments in the past, he has a flair for writing and quite frankly I don’t think I have ever had him comment here with less then 500 words… But, I love his passion and his zeal and I respect his goals and the way he has dealt and lived/survived with Bipolar Disorder. I’m talking about Ken Jensen, the Bipolar Eradicator!

I was told by many great writers and cartoonist the same thing over and over again… Write and Draw what you know! Well, the subject of jail, and run in with the police because of the Mental Disorders I live with have been limited… And I want to keep it that way.

To help us with that Ken will be our Guest Blogger:

Ken Jensen ittakesgutstobeme.com

Great post Chato! (state penitentiary, jail, prison, and mental illness )

I’ve been in jail for overnighters about 5 times. I’ve had more run-ins with the cops than I can recall both in and out of the Marines, and I’ve worn dozens of sets of cuffs. As a fellow ne’er do well told once me, “You know? For what I paid for these things you’d think they’d make them more comfortable!” LOL So true.

I’ve been sent to dryout shelters, and detained in backs of cars, stuck in cells, but all just one to two day events.

I’ve had both my arms torn out of their sockets by pulling my hands, cuffed behind my back, over my head until I was looking at the backs of them.

I’ve been choked out, knocked out, and beaten pretty good by cops here and there over the years. I was always drunk but my drunks were based in my bipolar disorder. And in the most recent years (over 4 years ago now), I was completely psychotic. Completely, totally, and powered by violence, psychotic.

The point to why I shared all this is that nobody could help fix me and address what the actual crap was that was driving all this inside me until I did it myself. I’ll stay generalized in my tale but you know it. Nobody could help me but me in the long run.

The way I repaired myself would NOT be granted to me in prison. That is one of my quiet horrors of potentiality. The way I healed has nothing to do with drugs but all they’ll do for me in jail would be to give me drugs. I already have 6 years of solid experience, and a foot thick record of doctor’s visits showing that I am 100% meds-resistant. The methods I use now worked and still work fantastically well but would not be allowed in prison.

And once that situation ever saw the light of day, I would be dead. I can’t go back in any way, shape, or form to how I used to be. The doctors would probably kill me in their attempts to “heal” or “control” me but probably, I would flip out along the way and say just the right thing to “Tiny” and he’d end my pain for me. I have no doubt. It’s how I always knew I’d die before I ultimately got better.

I am totally fine now and have been for years but I know that if I ever relaxed on how I take care of myself, it would all come rushing back.

This means no jail for me, ever.

Of course, barring the unforeseen, there should never be a reason why that would ever happen, but I’m just sayin’.

As I grow with what I do professionally, I want to address the severe lack of nutrition in jails and how that massively helps propel mental illnesses. Most jails spend as little as possible on food or anything else for the prisoners. Fact of life.

I saw examples of this end result while working in an all boys home. The kids all had mental problems and massive life problems, plus, they were boys. Young and full of energy. We (the system) controlled them through medication, massively restricted most of their freedoms, and gave them almost no chance to exercise as they were all disciplinary timebombs and mostly just fought with each other and us all the time. But it’s not a stretch to see how their environment and what we fed them helped that right along.

The food they ate (and me too, as a staff member as I was broke at the time) was total garbage. I sadly watched so many of my boys balloon 25, 50, to 100 pounds beyond their norm in less than 6 months. It was stunning to witness. I fattened up too.

I all but grieved for their position in life but mine was hardly better then. But working there gave me a clear idea of how much worse prison would be for health purposes.

Ok. I’m done. ;-) See ya next time!

Ken

Thank You Ken for helping us with understanding what many people have gone through and are dealing with when it comes to bipolar and the legal troubles.

Mental Health Humor: State Penitentiary, Jail, Prison and Mental Illness-

It is estimated the 25% of prison inmates are dealing with a major mental disorder and another 16% will develop one in the course of time spent behind bars. For many of them it is too late, and all that can be done is to work the system even then it depends on the state or facility and from the inside. I will not get into the deplorable conditions many people dealing with mental disorders face while inside. No rather, lets talk about what can be done to prevent the prison door from shutting on us.

Now, if you’re lucky, then your “mental condition” has never lead you in doing something that requires the police to get involved. May be you’re lucky that, oh, I don’t know, that back in October of 1998 you decided to go out fooling around with a pellet gun in some semi-public area only to have a gun-ho JR police officer pull his gun and point it at your head while screaming all the time… “keep your hands where I can see them”… Well, maybe that wasn’t you. Oh the joy of youth.

Still, we make some bad choices while under the control of our mental disorder, some times, they can never be undone! This is why we must be willing to put the work into our recovery. So we can have control or at least, know when we should get more help. We can’t give up, or we might have a cell waiting for us, with a 300lb dude named Tiny as a room mate.jail,State Prison Inmates ,State Pen,mental health humor

Mental Health Humor: Week-end Saturday Review September 20th - 26th -
Happy Saturday! I hope everyone is having a Delightful Day…or as good a day as possible according to your circumstances! I hope you are making the best of your day despite whatever things “out of your control” may be going on in your life….Think Peace and always pursue it to the best of your ability…it makes life nicer. Can you believe, another week gone by so fast. Thank You to every one for honoring this blog with awards but especially for checking out and responding/commenting to MentalHealthHumor.com on a regular basis! Sorry, still trying to get that special post out…and I haven’t (as of yet) been able to get to the other Arte Y Pico Awards …but I will….so thanks for your ongoing patience with me and my blog! I found this cool quote from Calvin Coolidge - “No Person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.” So, I hope I can keep giving in some small way and that my cartoons will continue to give you all a laugh! If you haven’t already…Please subscribe and as always - Stay TOONED )

Mental Health Humor, ssri, fat, weight,Sunday: The Cost of Happiness Cartoon and Blog discussed the Trade off between keeping your Mental/Emotional Well-being through medications that potentially damage your “physical” well-being. Check out the comments for this blog…Thanks for commenting every one!

electricmousie:

I’m beginning to hate taking my medications and have been thinking of either cutting back or completely stopping them. I’m wearing a lot of extra lbs that were put there by all the different meds I tried in the last 17 years. I used to be very small, tiny like a mousie; weight wasn’t an issue for me to worry about. I don’t think it’s right that we should have to sacrifice one part of our body in order to help the other. I hate like hell to go through all the anguish and torture that are now a memory…..but…..I don’t want this extra weight to affect other parts of my body (my BP is already being treated for being so high) It just isn’t FAIR! @ Chato. I always love your cartoons, but this one especially hit home and my gut! -)Mental Health Humor: Weighing the Side-Effects of Medication. I’m glad I made your day especially for a Monday!@sunnflr. I know the medications and we went through everything. You know that less than 1% experience this side effect, well, I one of those. I know that this is it, my mood is stable and my weight gain is under control, now I’m just waiting for my lab results. Cross my fingers because then it is making a choice. Funny, both mental health and physical health issues can create shorter lives.Sep 22, 4:52 PM —

Tiffany | desertorchid.wordpress.com

It is unfortunate how the side effects of mood stabilizing drugs can be so negative. I am currently taking seroquel also and it does have some weight gaining effects. I’m not sure about high blood pressure, because that has never been a issue for me.
I guess you just have to take it one step at a time. I’m sure there are ways you can work on your weight and blood pressure without the meds getting in the way. Good luck with that though. Keep us posted! Sep 22, 4:25 PM — Mental Health Humor: Weighing the Side-Effects of Medication.

@ClinicallyClueless : Thank you so much for your encouraging words and commenting from the heart. As you know blogging is quite a viral and surreal world. Sometimes, the blogger need know that they are connecting with people. Well, for me today was one of those days… Thanks for cheering me up! Sep 22, 1:16 PM — — Mental Health Humor: Weighing the Side-Effects of Medication.

sunnflr  healthandhappiness.today.com

Seems like the doctor could find another medication to help with your moods and sleep that doesn’t cause weight gain. There are so many medictions these days, there has to be one that would work. Good luck with everything. Sep 22, 1:10 PM  — Mental Health Humor: Weighing the Side-Effects of Medication.

ClinicallyClueless ClinicallyClueless@blogspot.com

I love what you have to say about the side effect. My side effects is what caused us to go through many medication changes in about two years. I gained 50 pounds, went from a size 25 pants to 30 and with an eating disorder it panicked me to know end and then I just kept getting more depressed the more I gained despite changing my diet and exercising. So, we changed medications and in three weeks I lost 10 pounds and feel better emotionally and physically. However, I still have a problem with hyperprolactation which cause weight gain and some other interesting side effects…look it up.Seroquel elevated my triglycerides from 36 to almost 300, so we discontinued that. I think, what I am taking now is as good as it gets.I love the cartoon and your message… Sep 22, 11:32 AM — Mental Health Humor: Weighing the Side-Effects of Medication.

Glad to have you back E-mouse, i know for me once i have a “mask” on for to long I start to wonder who is the real me.It’s so funny thought that we ware mask to hide real people while other wear mask so that can look like real people… O.K, that might not make much sense to every one, but to a few, they will understand, and say to me… hey, that naked no sense.Sep 25, 9:52 PM —  Mental Health Humor: Masks, who we are under what we show others?

I couldn’t get in yesterday; had computer problems…DON”T WE ALL???!!!!
In answer for your question, yes I do hide behand a mask..there’s certain times and people that I don’t want witnessing my depression; they’re the ones who don’t have two clues about being bipolar or schizophrenic;;;;;;;even the names of these illnesses incite fear or hate; I try to seem less like an outcast of society and I fight it with everything I have. But yes, I do have masks that I have to use from time to time, and it’ such a relief when ever I have the chance to take them off. (and be myself…..) electricmousie |

GREAT JOB, CHATO!!!!! Your paintings are wondeful; they are nice and bright and look really good! I don’t paint much except for tole painting so I really appreciate good art when I see it!
I used to volunteer at our local TV station; helped ou tfor four years before I had my initial meltdown. My better half and I used to love singing so I came up withthe idea of putting a show together every week; just half an hour in which we tried to include as many acts as possible (usually two; dancers and singers). It was tough loooking at the administrative side of things but once I got going it was a wondeful wonderful outlet for my mania (and I was way way up there; it was perfect for hosting a show. Surprisingly enough it took off and was extremely popular! **** I loved being immersed with the show; and it lasted 4 years; two years in a row we won the Best Producers award..I still have them on my wall to remind me that YES I CAN tackle a project and do it well!!!
I don’t sing much any more but I’m loooking into volunteering up in the hospital…maybe helping in the gift shop or running the book cart around all the floors! People are calling me their little Ray of Sunshine now cause I’m high and bouncy and they just love it! I still have my times but they’re not nearly as distressing as they were!!
Keep up your painting Chato, you never know where it might take you to!!!

What a GREAT week! Did you reach any personal goals?…Give yourself a pat on the back and a word of encouragement to keep going forward! I hope we are all on the same page now and moving in the same direction…toward healing, happiness and of course, laughter! Take Care, Be Safe, and Keep Laughing )*********************
