Mental Health Humor: China bans bunny suicide book : Special Post
Mental Health Humor: China bans bunny suicide book
The Associated Press reported this the other day. If you have seen the book or the cartoon, you might have had some type of reaction to it… You might have seen some of the things this bunny was doing to kill himself as a bit funny… Or like me, you might of thought that it was sick! Still, I did chuckle at more than a couple of the jokes… Maybe because of my own twisted mind and sense of humor or maybe because I thought of committing suicide that same way at one time or another when I was off medications.
But this just shows how powerful a “negative” cartoon can be… sadly, in this case, it was the child who might have paid the price.
I find myself conflicted since as a cartoonist, I can see the humor and jokes for what they are. And Andy Riley is a great writer and cartoonist and tapped into a market of twisted humor with a cute and fuzzy bunny. The series started back in the UK in 2003 and even “Cartoonist Liu Gang was inspired by the book to create his Suicide Rabbit.”
Dark humor, there is a place for it, but my personal feelings are when you make it (suicide) look cute and fuzzy, that is just not right. No matter how much money you can make from the success, just think the message is wrong!
China bans bunny suicide book

SHANGHAI - A spate of suicides and attempted suicides by children in China’s biggest city has prompted a bookseller to pull a popular cartoon book featuring suicidal bunnies off its shelves.
The decision by Bookuu Book City in Shanghai to take the Chinese-language version of Book of Bunny Suicides: Little Fluffy Rabbits Who Just Don’t Want to Live Anymore off the shelves reflects unease and soul-searching over pressures on Chinese students.
The book is a sometimes morbid but humourous collection of cartoons showing a rabbit attempting to end his life in various bizarre ways.
“We took the book off our shelves because we’re worried that children might try to imitate some of those ways of killing themselves,” said Zhu Bin, a public relations officer for the bookseller.
In just over a week after the school term began on September 1, one boy killed himself and another four teens attempted to commit suicide, prompting a flurry of commentary in Shanghai’s state-run newspapers blaming the exams pressure on students.
So, in keeping with the Mental Health Humor theme of “positive” cartoons, I will NOT show any of the Suicide Bunny cartoons. No I’d rather think the furry guy got some help, so I call this cartoon Recovery Bunny!
