Mental Health Humor: Weighing the Side-Effects of Medication.

“Chato, you really need to do something about your weight.  If you don’t, you could have some major health problems… You already have hypertension and high blood pressure with high cholesterol… You are a ticking time bomb.” My doctor continues,”now about your moods, we have to get this under control, too! So, I’m going to put you on Quetiapine (Seroquel) to help your moods and sleep…”

“Doesn’t that have a side-effect of weight gain and can cause issues with high blood pressure?”  I ask.., “Yes” he Said, “but we are only going to keep you on it for a short time.”  He fills out my scripts and says, “make an appointment with the nurse to come back in three months.”

Now ask me if that was what I wanted and if I will “complain”… Why should my mental well being require me to give up my health?

Seems like the doctor could find another medication to help with your moods and sleep that doesn’t cause weight gain. There are so many medictions these days, there has to be one that would work. Good luck with everything.

I hate taking medications especially those that have a real TENDENCY to cause weight gain (Depakote, all antipsychotics, etc).
When I started taking mood stabilizers for my bipolar disorder….I gained a lot of weight. This was about 19 years ago….and now I have some many extra pounds to lose. Due to a weight problem, I have had to have a knee replaced.
It was like this….have surgery or put up with serious mental health issues (i.e., depression that was neverending)…so I decided to have the knee replaced.
Since the replacement, I have felt like a real person with real energy and the ability to enjoy the life I have been working ever so hard to build.
To all of the people who has mental health issues: Check with your psychiatrist or whomever prescribes your meds to see if there aren’t drugs that aren’t as likely to put extra pounds on you.
I have worked on my mental health challenges and have been able to take less drugs or no drugs (depending on the time of the year it is….). I don’t recommend one to go off of them on your own…
I believe in recovery. I have to work on that everyday though. One can’t just take a ”vacation” and not work on yourself….
