Mental Health Humor: The Joys Of Volunteering -

Hello all! I have to say “sorry” if my last cartoon made you a little squirmish… For the record, my wife never liked it but I thought it was funny. Any way, did you know this blog is 100% volunteer work for me… Yup, that it is, and I love it! Drawing cartoons and talking about different disorders has been so revitalizing to me. I am meeting so many wonderful people who not only have walked in my shoes but like my cartoons too… That is a big plus!

Now, I also do lots of other volunteer work, mostly from my house. I help out at my local drop-in center with their website… of which, I will be up-dating very soon. I was in there the other day and they asked me if I can paint a sign for the Garden Center they are setting up to help raise money and to give the members a great project that every one can help with.

It is in two parts and has an area to post the day’s specials. They liked it so much they called and asked if I could paint the main sign.

This is what it looked like when I started.

And this is the finished sign 6 hours latter… LOL I was in the sun all day, too.

The staff was happy with it and it was not bad for my second sign! What is more important is the joy I felt doing it. It got me out of the house.. and doing something I love to do anyway… draw and paint. I don’t think I could make this into a job, but it was really fun to do. Here is what they both looked like as I left.

So, that is what I have been doing…Volunteering is very good for your mental/emotional well-being. Helping others out or offering words of hope can make a difference to many. What kind of volunteering do you do?

GREAT JOB, CHATO!!!!! Your paintings are wondeful; they are nice and bright and look really good! I don’t paint much except for tole painting so I really appreciate good art when I see it!
I used to volunteer at our local TV station; helped ou tfor four years before I had my initial meltdown. My better half and I used to love singing so I came up withthe idea of putting a show together every week; just half an hour in which we tried to include as many acts as possible (usually two; dancers and singers). It was tough loooking at the administrative side of things but once I got going it was a wondeful wonderful outlet for my mania (and I was way way up there; it was perfect for hosting a show. Surprisingly enough it took off and was extremely popular! **** I loved being immersed with the show; and it lasted 4 years; two years in a row we won the Best Producers award..I still have them on my wall to remind me that YES I CAN tackle a project and do it well!!!
I don’t sing much any more but I’m loooking into volunteering up in the hospital…maybe helping in the gift shop or running the book cart around all the floors! People are calling me their little Ray of Sunshine now cause I’m high and bouncy and they just love it! I still have my times but they’re not nearly as distressing as they were!!
Keep up your painting Chato, you never know where it might take you to!!!

    Chato,

Thank you, for all your hard work and dedication to The Haven. As you know it is my sincere hope that we can find additional funding in the near future to bring you on as a paid staff member. Along with all his other talents, Chato is first rate support group facilitator.
