Title:

Magnet Therapy For Depression

My father was big on the use of magnets for his headaches and other pains.  He would cut out the magnets from refrigerator doors and wear it like a head band. He would also make bracelets too.  Now, the fact is that the strength of the magnets he was using might have done very little other then make him look a bit strange but he was on to something.  He always said that in the future magnets would play a huge part in our lives… That was back in the early 80’s and well, if Dad was with us today I’m sure he would be the first to tell us he was right.

Today, magnets are used for many different things and even depression:

Depression can now be treated by a magnet. It’s called transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, and it’s the first non-invasive brain simulator approved to treat the disease. It works by sending pulses though the skull that spark brain cells to fire, but TMS is only approved for patients who have had no relief from their first antidepressant.

The following are some questions you might have about TMS and they can be answered by following the link.

What is rTMS?

What disorders has TMS been shown to be useful for?

What does it feel like to receive TMS?

Do you need to get anesthetized for TMS?

Does it hurt?

How long does a treatment session last?

How many times do you need to receive TMS?

Are there any side-effects or risks associated with rTMS?

Is TMS widely available to patients in the U.S.?Why are researchers evaluating TMS?

 Mental Health Humor: Quick Review

With the last two weeks I’ve been trying to keep up with my cartoons and posts while packing and moving.  Needless to say things have been a bit stressful moving with four kids, with out power but we got it all done.  But we did not have too much time to post our weekly review so I thought I would post all the cartoons we have done for October.  This way we will be all caught up and ready to go for November.  I still can’t believe the year is almost over, this will go down as our Recovery year in our house.

With me totally nuts the first 3 months, then in recovery for the next six  and now holding my own for the last 3.  But we will save all that for for a different review post.

I’ll be Pleading The Fifth

Over the years I have heard the ol’ “Devil Made Me Do It” expression now and again, and I might of even used it myself.  But, in the book ‘Help Yourself to Positive Mental Health’ By Howard Rosenthal and Joseph W. Hollis says in chapter 8 we should “stop describing yourself with negative labels”

self_help.jpg

I think this makes sence, since it is so much easier to blame others then to look at our self as the culprate or cause of our problems.  I was looking over this book on the Google book preview site and I must say it did have a lot of good advice.  I think I’m going to check out the library to see if they have a copy.

Here is what the site says about the book:

This work reveals 50 simple ideas and concrete activities to improve anyone’s mental well-being. Written in a conversational style, this resource provides techniques and specific suggestions to combat depression, fear, loneliness, anger, a poor self-image, undesirable habits, poor communication, relationship difficulties and other problems. Step-by-step, the authors show the reader the way to positive mental health.; All 50 ideas are introduced in the same straightforward format: a basic idea is presented on the right-hand page and a concise, one-page explanation that defines the concept and how to implement it is shown on the left.

Heath Ledger ‘may have been bipolar’

This was reported on www.digitalspy.co.uk  By Michael Thornton

Heath Ledger 'may have been bipolar'

Rex Features

Heath Ledger may have been suffering from bipolar disorder, a new book has claimed… An autopsy later concluded that the cause was an accidental overdose of prescription medication.

New book Heath: A Family’s Tale, written by English journalist Janet Fife-Yeomans, has raised the possibility that Ledger was suffering from bipolar disorder.

The breakdown of Ledger’s relationship with Michelle Williams may also have been a factor in the onset of the disorder, it is alleged.

Yeomans also suggested that mental illness runs in his family, and interviewed his uncle Haydn Ledger, who was recently diagnosed with the condition.

“I don’t mind people knowing I have bipolar disorder and it’s a shame that it took this long to be diagnosed,” he told her.

This is both sad and some what comforting to be able to have some understanding why this young talented man died.   Just today Ashley Olsen revealed that she suffers with social anxiety and if you see the interview you could almost feel the tension in the air.

We look around and see so many “famous” people and we could sometimes wish we had what they have.  But the reality is they are people too, even Jennifer Lopez came out about her depression… Well, maybe not came out, but was revealed.  Do I even have to mention Britney Spears, seems like we are somewhat in the same boat when mental health is the subject.  I only hope others don’t follow the course Heath did, it is very  possible he was bipolar given the family history, but what ever mental status was one thing we can all learn from his death.  To never take more then our prescribed medication.  Follow the doctors order  and never mix alcohol or other drugs with your meds.

Mental Health Humor: Moving to Unpacking to Bed

Well, I am almost there, we moved our last things over Sunday night.  I cannot believe how much JUNK we have accumulated over the last seven years.  The funny thing is the two HUGE piles of garbage we had at the curb.  Who knew one could have so much, it just seemed like the pile would not end.  But, it was O.K., we posted a lot of the stuff on line and recycled a lot of other stuff.  So when they come Wednesday to get every thing all they will be getting is real trash.

I just want to thank every one for coming by, we will be back to 100% soon. I just have to find the box with my scanner in it.  Till then enjoy one of our older toons.
