Mental Health Humor: Ask Dr. Bob Bob, Mental health and Marriage -

Yes, this is right, today is my 17th year wedding anniversary! Seven-teen years of ups and downs, this way and that way. Well, I guess we must be doing some thing right. Now only if I knew what it was!

Marriage is hard enough with out added problems. The CDC website divorce rate stats show 4 out of 10 marriages fail with in the first five years. So, it is no surprise that many people with a spouse with a disorder have a higher divorce rate. When this happens, that can rip a couple and family apart so quickly. Some times marriages fail because of the great stress that is put on the marriage from a mental illness.

If I were asked to answer how to have a successful marriage and put it into one word, what would that word be?

LOVE? - Well it does count all right, but no it not love.

SEX? - Well, a good sexual relationship with your spouse is important, but no again.

RELIGION? - Still a good answer, and faith is essential but it needs work.

THERAPY? - Good, talking to someone to fix your problem is good, but if you’re in therapy then the one thing you should always have had to have a successful marriage would have been missing.

So, what is it??? Communication!

With communication you can express your love, your sexuality, and your God. You can talk frankly about problems and work on finding solutions together. With communication map out plans on what to do when symptoms start to get out of control. Yes, communication is in my view the glue that can help keep the marriage together.

Now you just think about that one… Hold on for a second, my wife is yelling to me from the other room, she’s saying something about how I need to apply this post or some thing like that… I don’t know what she is saying… Blah, Blah, Blah…. Anyway where was I? Oh, ya, we need to listen to our spouse and be able to talk out our issues… well, here is the cartoon.

I relate to Dr Bob’s answer. I tell my other half all the time that he must be crazier than I am just for staying with me. I’m glad he hasn’t figured that out yet.

Same here! We’ve been together (almost forever) and I sure don’t understand why he hasn’t gotten rid of me ages ago; when I ask him he says he loves me….who could love someone who’s bipolar and switching back and forth between mania/depression? What about all the really terrible things (and stupid, embarrassing things?) He seems to know how to keep a firm hand on the rudder, and just seems to roll with the punches. From my side of things; I definitely wouldn’t stay with someone like me!!!!!
Congratulations on your anniversary, Chato! !!! Get out and do something fun with your wife!!!
