This Monday over 50,000 people lost their jobs… We are in a depression!  For many of us, this will bring on a depression.  This situational depression does not make it any less serious.  The fact is that situational depression can trigger major depression or Bipolar Disorder and other long-term psychiatric problems.  The loss of work or foreclosures can take an emotional toll on any one.

Stress! The type that can twist and bend steel like it was tin foil… You can feel like your backed against the wall.  Suicide may seem like the way out…  But, it’s not… It’s just money, it comes and it goes… It is my belief that in the next few months, there are going to be many people who will fit this description.  These are people that may never had to deal with depression or emotional stress at this level.  I think this is where we, veteran consumers, who have lived with mental illness and depression for so long can really help.  If we talked about our experiences and were willing to reach out to help others …could make a “positive” difference.  We may find ourselves not just helping them, but it will help us too.

Some Times You Can Go Home Again.

We just had a friend visit from up north.  It was great to be with him, since he is family and living so far away we don’t get to see them all that much.  He knows about my “issues” and he deals with OCD so it was nice talking to some one that does not judge.  Although is has a more cynical view on life and, well the mood can be advantageous for some like myself.  We made the best of it any way and I did a caricature while we had a sing-long with the kids as he played the guitar…  Oh, he is a musician and has a great gig weekly up in Boston.

It got me thinking about family again…  I miss my Mother, a son is allow to feel this way… But can I go home again?

Title:

Physical Activity = Better Mental Health

It’s true we have talked about this many times before how physical activity and our Mental Health.  So there is no need to get into all the different so called studies that have been done.  What I want is some real facts!  Who among us have really used running or swimming to help our depression?  If you have what kind of depression were you dealing with?  I find it hard to believe that when I’m at my deepest depth of depression that is I go for a walk it will cure me… I in turn find it ludicrous to believe that the studies done focused on this type of depression.  Days when getting out of bed is the only far reach goal I have then how could going for a walk do much for me.

O.k. I do admit even thought I am a bit disillusioned with the studies I’ve seen that does not stop me from at least attempting to make some application of it.  So, even when my clinical mind wants to to just give up I will have faith and hope that ever attempt to improve my mood will in some way work to change my mood.

It’s not blind faith, I know it works and does help, but the help is geared more for preventive measures not to get out of the funk that blackens my mind.

A total of eight observational and five intervention studies were identified. Evidence from observational studies indicated that physical activity was inversely associated with depressive symptoms in young women. Even a small amount of physical activity was found to be associated with reduced depressive symptoms. No clear dose–response relationship was shown. Evidence from intervention studies indicated that physical activity reduced depressive symptoms. Direct study comparisons were difficult due to variations in study methods and measures. The studies provided little or no information on understanding dose–response effects or on the mechanisms involved.

No Job, No Heat, No Fairy Tales

Yes, today was a historic day and I’m sure you saw every one of your favorite blogs post about it today.  I won’t bore you but I will say it was quite an event to watch.

This does not change the fact that I’m not working and just getting one or two jobs here and there.  You would think, living down here in Florida, heat would not be a real issue. But every now and again we get a cold snap…  This week it has been cold! Tonight, it will be almost 45 degrees below our normal temperature.

It’s hard to get things done when the weather can affect your mood.  Yet, almost every one is affected by the weather one way or another.

Watch out for winter blues

Today’s the most depressing day of the year. Find your inner sun

Dana Gee, The Province

Published: Monday, January 19, 2009

Did you know there is officially a most depressing day of the year?

No, it’s not property tax deadline day or even the opening day of the movie Bride Wars. According to international studies cited by the Canadian Mental Health Association today, the third Monday in January is the year’s most depressing day.

“There’s all the build up of the holidays, and then it stops,” says Bev Gutray, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s B.C. division. “It’s the time, too, that bills are coming in and people are really beginning to think about money.”

D’Anne Howes, a clinical psychologist, says people affected by weather can make positive changes.  Read More here

Mental Health Humor:

 Portrait of My Mother

Today was my second class with my one on one art mentor.  This is my mother from a old picture from the late 50’s early 60’s.  It was done with just paint.  Different tones of blue…  Yes, I did have help with it but this was just my second class. Most of the students don’t have this type of result really for 8 weeks or more even with his help…  That made me feel great…  I even got choked up when he told me I had such a gift and I’ve wasted it for far too long!  He knows I’m having money issues so he said there is no way he is going to let me waste it anymore…  He is putting me to work around his house to work off my classes.

I know I’m a bit cryptic about the 83 year old Master Artist who is tutoring me.  This is because I’m going to build a basic website for him as a way to say thanks! I want it to be ready before I show you his work.

O.k. Robin wants me to share what I have learned from my art class…  First thing, I am learning  to find the shadows and to draw with line not curves…  I know that is a different concept.  It will take me some time to get it right.  With the painting, I learned that I have to work with light colors and work to dark… With this painting of my mother I was working on making it softer.

At this point, let me just tell you a little about Art Therapy.  Better yet, I let the AATA do it below.  All I know is when I was painting today, I felt my mind quiet and I was able to focus.

About Art Therapy

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.

Art therapy integrates the fields of human development, visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms), and the creative process with models of counseling and psychotherapy. Art therapy is used with children, adolescents, adults, older adults, groups, and families to assess and treat the following: anxiety, depression, and other mental and emotional problems and disorders; substance abuse and other addictions; family and relationship issues; abuse and domestic violence; social and emotional difficulties related to disability and illness; trauma and loss; physical, cognitive, and neurological problems; and psychosocial difficulties related to medical illness. Art therapy programs are found in a number of settings including hospitals, clinics, public and community agencies, wellness centers, educational institutions, businesses, and private practices.

Art therapists are masters level professionals who hold a degree in art therapy or a related field. Educational requirements include: theories of art therapy, counseling, and psychotherapy; ethics and standards of practice; assessment and evaluation; individual, group, and family techniques; human and creative development; multicultural issues; research methods; and practicum experiences in clinical, community, and/or other settings. Art therapists are skilled in the application of a variety of art modalities (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media) for assessment and treatment.
