Title:
Physical Activity = Better Mental Health
It’s true we have talked about this many times before how physical activity and our Mental Health. So there is no need to get into all the different so called studies that have been done. What I want is some real facts! Who among us have really used running or swimming to help our depression? If you have what kind of depression were you dealing with? I find it hard to believe that when I’m at my deepest depth of depression that is I go for a walk it will cure me… I in turn find it ludicrous to believe that the studies done focused on this type of depression. Days when getting out of bed is the only far reach goal I have then how could going for a walk do much for me.
O.k. I do admit even thought I am a bit disillusioned with the studies I’ve seen that does not stop me from at least attempting to make some application of it. So, even when my clinical mind wants to to just give up I will have faith and hope that ever attempt to improve my mood will in some way work to change my mood.
It’s not blind faith, I know it works and does help, but the help is geared more for preventive measures not to get out of the funk that blackens my mind.

Good one Chato. Good and frustrating discussion!
Personally, I feel better when I am with others and when I get exercise..BUT…really,the effects only last for the time of the activity and maybe for up to an hour afterwards if I am really active… yeah, right.
I think it’s probably the serotonin activity that is produced by the activity that helps. As an artist, I know you understand that accessing/going into the right brain is the crucial thing we are really talking about here. Right brain activities, include art, music, physical activity, helping others, getting passionate about something that takes our minds off ourselves… takes us out of the left brain side that wants to compart-mentalize everything. The left side, although important, serves to causes my torture. Compartments are strange. They are the boxes and closets and drawers we’ve been told to stuff everything into so we can act and look normal on the outside. Then we pay therapists who want to make us open the compartment and look at the junk we stuffed away, if we want to get better, aka, look better. Anyway, if it were up to us, most of us would stuff these things in slightly more creative places than closets and drawers…
AND I totally agree that getting out of bed can be the major activity of the day and if I can get through that and a shower (HA!) will I have the energy and guts to find the door to the outside world? The answer is a resounding “maybe”.
