This Monday over 50,000 people lost their jobs… We are in a depression!  For many of us, this will bring on a depression.  This situational depression does not make it any less serious.  The fact is that situational depression can trigger major depression or Bipolar Disorder and other long-term psychiatric problems.  The loss of work or foreclosures can take an emotional toll on any one.

Stress! The type that can twist and bend steel like it was tin foil… You can feel like your backed against the wall.  Suicide may seem like the way out…  But, it’s not… It’s just money, it comes and it goes… It is my belief that in the next few months, there are going to be many people who will fit this description.  These are people that may never had to deal with depression or emotional stress at this level.  I think this is where we, veteran consumers, who have lived with mental illness and depression for so long can really help.  If we talked about our experiences and were willing to reach out to help others …could make a “positive” difference.  We may find ourselves not just helping them, but it will help us too.

Mental Health Humor:

Cheerleader mom sent to mental health facility

This is where humorous action can cost us time…  For this woman who has already, obviously, lost so much due to her uncontrolled mental condition - now has lost 3 more years of her life…  Only, this might be what saves her life if she gets the help she needs.  Read the Story below.  Only try to see the humor, but don’t blame her… Use it more as a cautionary tale…

Cheerleader mom sent to mental health facility

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin woman who enrolled in high school under her daughter’s name and tried out for the cheerleading squad has been committed to a mental health facility for three years.

Wendy Brown was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to a charge of identity theft. The 34-year-old woman apologized Tuesday in court.

Records show Brown attended one day of classes last August at Ashwaubenon (ash-WAH’-bah-nahn) High School and practiced with the cheerleading squad while posing as her 15-year-old daughter, who was living with a relative out of state.

Investigators learned her true identity after she was reported as truant and found that she had been jailed in a forgery case. Brown told investigators she wanted to relive her high school experience.

Personally, what I found really funny is that she would have gotten away with it for a while if she just showed up at school… So, now she gets to relive her high school experience for the next 3 years…

Please take your meds! (Or encourage your loved one.) Talk to your therapist and see your doctor…  Or at least show up to school on time…

Book Title: Bipolar for Dummies - Run, Run Away! RUN!

Cartoon Title:

Coming Soon: Husband In A Box

Ask any marriage counselor or talk to any couple that has or has had a mate living with a mental disorder, if it has affected their relationship.  I think you already know the answer.  Staying together is hard enough without a mental illness… The facts show 1 and 3 marriages end within the first 5 years.  So, how can some one with a mood disorder keep theirs from going down the toilet?

O.K… First, let me say that without a doubt, any marriage that has lasted and suffered through the valley of death and despair that is mental illness….  these couples would not have made it if it were not for the primary caregiver.  The primary caregiver is your wife or husband.  While we are off to Lou-Lou Land, they are always doing what they can to hold us together… Making sure we take our meds and get the help we need.  They are educated about the illness.  They have a compassion and love for us that we should be kissing their feet and begging for forgiveness daily!

Show me a couple that is living with one mate with a mental disorder that has been married more then 15 years that the above does not describe them to a tee… And I’ll bet they are misdiagnosed.

We, who live with these disorders, need to find ways to help our loved ones know that we are here for them. We want to make sure our marriage survives the rage of our disorders.

Here are a few tips that may help you avoid having to buy the Wife/Husband In A Box.

1. Talk to you mate… Keep the lines of communication open… Especially when your balanced…

2. Do something nice for your wife / Husband … Make time for them!  Sometimes, we get too caught up with our own inner demons that we forget our angels that help us fight them off…  Two are stronger then one.

3. Make an emergency plan, so that if things get real bad that it can be followed.  Keep your mind to follow it if needed.  This will help give your loved one a plan of action if things get too bad… It will give some control over a raging storm that is in you.

4. Be honest!  Don’t lie or cheat!  Don’t Steal or put yourself in a position that breaks up so many other marriages that don’t deal with a mental disorder.  It’s hard enough to stay together why add to problems…

5. Say it, and do it often!  Say I LOVE YOU! Show them that under the layers of distortions their is still deep love and passion for them…  And show it!  Make time for intimacy!   NOT just sex!  But time to be alone, just to talk about nothing at all…  Just fun stuff…  Holding hands can have so much power and a sweet, loving kiss makes your hair stand on end.

Now, I’m not  saying doing this will save a marriage but it could be the stuff to help  avoid it going down the road of marital apathy.

What do you do to keep your marriage working?
