Mental Health Humor:

December 25, 30 MILLION DEAD!!!

Cartoon Caption:

30 million are now dead! How can I be JOLLY about that!

Title:

Arbor Seasonal Depression Day

Yes, it’s true that over 30 million trees are harvested each year this time of year. That is  about 780 square miles or equivalent to half the size of Rhode Island. After all is said and done with the trees, less then 30% of them are recycled.  It should be noted that there are about 4,000 recycling areas set up for Christmas trees and that trees are bio-degradable. The large majority of them just end up in the trash!

With all the cutting down of the trees one might start to feel down or even a little depressed. Even though the term depressed is sometime over used to refer to a simple “blue” mood. The reality is depression is serious. Consider what is really going on with your mood.

The type of depression in the above cartoon is called Situational depression.

This is the form of depression that rears its head in direct response to external circumstances. Any number of traumas or trying events can trigger a bout of situational depression. The death of a loved one, or the loss of a job, for instance, may produce intense and temporarily debilitating depressive symptoms. The key to differentiating situation depression from its clinical counterpart is the temporary nature of the symptomology and the fact that it can often be traced back to a specific cause. One should note that traumatic events can also herald the onset of clinical depression. However, those suffering from situational depression may find life very difficult for a period of time. They may feel agitated or nervous, have disruptions in sleeping habits, or experience other common depressive symptoms. However, the problem usually passes as the individual learns to cope with the problems that triggered the episode..  - Three Kinds of Depression

Mental Health Humor: Block Head!

mental health humor cartoons depression bipolar manic

  1. chatobstewart Says:
The Block Head joke is not meant to be happy…lol

  2. electricmousie Says:
You’re right, Chato; the “blockhead” cartoon isn’t meant to be funny; almost all of us can relate to it..I was name called something terrible all through school, talked about when I left school and started married life..I just didn’t seem to fit in very well (I do understand that my behavior left alot to be desired…making bad decisions, raising H— when I was super manic…) After 20 years of active therapy I’ve settled down a lot, and seem to be fitting into the group here at the apartment complex! I just hope I can continue on the straight and narrow!!!

  3. chatobstewart Says:
Welcome back EMouse! I’m gald to hear your fitting in… I guess a few squair blocks can fit in the round hole every now and agin.

Mental Health Humor: Ask Dr Bob Bob - I HATE YOU!

  1. CJ Says:
E.C.T. is just shocking! I too don’t know anyone that has had anything good to say about it.

  2. tom Says:
Dr. Bob Bob, LOL what a mama’s boy!

  3. electricmousie Says:
I don’t do too well when the weather goes down extremely cold and I am stuck in my apartment. It’s bound to make me depressed and more than a little cranky…as long as I can get outside I can make it through till spring.

  4. pbdad Says:
    Sounds like my mother.

  5. lvs Says:
It sounds good as a joke. But yes sometimes we ignore our parents so much that they have to resort to silly things to catch our attention. That is really sad.

  6. chatobstewart Says:
@lvs: So true, I guess Dr. Bob Bob does know a thing or two…

Mental Health Humor:

A Snowman, It’s a Terrible Thing to Waste… Ask for Help Now.

Cartoon Caption:

Do the changes in weather affect you?

Are your eyes heavy or do you have black rings around them?

Is your mood a jolly, happy soul one second, Frosty COLD the next?

Are you addicted to smoking or using a pipe?

Do you feel like you’re alone and the only one of your kind?

Is your obsession for hats, controlling your life?

Title:

A Snowman, It’s a Terrible Thing to Waist or waste… Ask for Help Now.

Suicide - it’s a subject that needs to be talked about this time of year.  Now you may believe, it is because during the holidays is the highest cases of Suicide .  But you would be wrong!  It just gets the most media and has a bit more awe and shock to the average person that does not live with a “disorder”.

If you or someone you love is having a hard time and is in crisis, please seek help right now or call 911 without delay!

Suicide is not the answer!  Even if we may believe that it will be best for everyone if I were gone… The truth is it won’t and it would just cause my kids to grow up thinking their father did not love them enough to stick around through the touch times.  I know on this site, we try to add humor to every aspect of living with a mental disorder.  It is true there is some dark humor that goes along with suicide.  I believe this is a line that has to be crossed sometimes, in order to get subject matter discussed… Although, I don’t feel today’s cartoon comes any way near that dark humor I’m talking about.  Actually, I’m sure a few people might now even know the real subject matter is about suicide.

What ever the case , we are talking about it and that is good. So now lets take it to the next set and see if we can’t refresh ourselves on how to help ourselves or our loved ones who may be suicidal this time of year.

The following is right from  Suicidal.com. It is in a lesson format that we all should review right now. I will post the whole plan and we can review it a little at a time.  I will also add this to the menu for a while.

Mental Health Humor: How Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy work with O.C.D.

 Title::

How Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy work with O.C.D.

I found this at Helpguide.org Dealing with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors:

  • Educate yourself. Learn everything you can about OCD. Read books on the disorder and talk to your therapist and doctor. The more you know, the better able you will be to manage your symptoms. You can find many books about OCD at local or online bookstores.
  • Practice the skills you’ve learned in therapy. Using the skills you’ve learned in therapy, actively work toward eliminating your obsessions and compulsive behaviors. This is a challenge that requires commitment and daily practice.
  • Stay connected to family and friends. Obsessions and compulsions can consume your life to the point of social isolation. In turn, social isolation can aggravate your OCD. It’s important to have a network of family and friends you can turn to for help and support. Involving others in your treatment can help guard against setbacks and keep you motivated.
  • Join an OCD support group. You’re not alone in your struggle with OCD, and participating in a support group is an effective reminder of that. In a support group, you can share your experience and learn from others who are going through the same thing you are. Click here to search the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation’s support group database.
  • Practice relaxation techniques. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and other stress relief techniques may help reduce the symptoms of anxiety brought on by OCD. Mindfulness meditation may be particularly helpful to OCD sufferers.

O.C.D. is a very serious disorder and people struggling with it should not be stereotyped by the so called strange behavior.  Not every one with O.C.D. has the exact conditions or symptoms.

There are different levels too, I’m more of what some might sarcastically call a “Germaphobe”…  You know the person that will carry around hand sanitizer and wipe every thing down before they touch it… I’ve even gone days with out using a public bathroom when I’ve been on trips… and when I just have to use it, I wall paper it with paper towels!

Now when I go out to eat and if I can see my food being prepared at a restaurant, I’m less likely to stay if I don’t see them with gloves on…  I have even ordered meals then seen the person sneeze then demand they wash their hands and make it again or I walked out.  Or if I see my waiter touch my food, I will cut that area off… Oh, and don’t get me started about finding a hair!!!  Needless to say, I don’t eat out much… and when I do It is not pleasant…  I lived by the old adages when it comes to eating  out on the run… Peel it, unwrap it, or unscrew it… The rest you avoid…

Mental Health Humor: A Love Nut

Caption:

This can’t be a healthy obsession!

Title:

A Love Nut

I am a member of many different social networks as I’m sure many of you are.  But keeping up with MySpace or FaceBook and the dozen others while running the blogs, drawing the cartoons, writing the content, working at home and working “my real” and keeping balanced and being a father and trying to be a good husband… Well, sometimes I don’t have the time to make all the rounds. As I’m sure you know, there are tons of Mental Health Social Networks… Some are lively and informative and others are dominated by the jerks that got kicked out of the good and well-monitored networks.  Nevertheless, I love that fact that we have so many.  It gives everyone an opportunity to find one that fits their mood or personality.  Still, I have had some bad experiences with a few normally due to one power hungry megliomaniac that needs to be the center of attention… But after they kicked me out, the groups normally get better.

Anyway, I got an e-mail the other day from one of the networks and I thought I would share it with you all and say Thanks to it’s author.

Love Your Work!

MESSAGE:

Mr. Chato Stewart;

I absolutely love your work. Your cartoons are created in such a way that often can only be appreciated by a person with MI (mental illness). Of course, when I am manic, I understand the hidden meaning behind each one, and I know that I can do a much better job. Or I might go through your archives and copy each one, categorizing them by topic, or date, or color, or height of character, or both. When I am depressed, I don’t even look at them, since they might just cheer me up, and I couldn’t have that, now could I? :)

Anyway, thank you so much, and keep up the great work of helping me cope.

Blessings, and with warmest wishes,

WS. Sr.
